Our department was first founded in 1969 and in 1972, a night class was added to increase student enrollment. In 1985, a joint graduate program for History and Languages was established, offering programs in Chinese and History. In 1994, each department established their own graduate programs, and the History department began to accept Master’s students for its graduate program. In 1997, the History department began accepting Doctoral candidates for its Ph.D. program specializing in the areas Taiwanese history, Chinese history and World history. In order to cope with the demands of a changing society, the night class began an overhaul of its curriculum in 1997. As a result, enrollment in the night class was temporarily suspend in 2000, but reopened in 2003 to accept graduate students for its co-operative education class.
